Better Skin After 60
During menopause lower levels of estrogen have a big impact on our skin. Less estrogen makes our skin prone to thinning, sagging, and wrinkling. Fortunately, we can relieve some of the skin-related issues of aging by taking care of specific skin care needs. Our body stops making as much collagen as it did when we were in our 20’s and 30’s. We lose some fat under our skin and our elasticity drops. That, combined with dryness caused by hormonal changes, can cause sagging, especially around the neck, jawline and cheeks, and fine lines and wrinkles.
Cleansing is an important skin care step especially at night before bed. The key is using a creamy formula that hydrates instead of a foam or gel which can strip moisture away.
Serums are vital at our age. Our skin is alive and needs to be fed with serums specific to the issue we want to improve, for example thinning skin needs a growth factor serum. Damaged protective barriers need an antioxidant serum. Preventative retinal serum, and Vitamin C for DNA repair.
Moisturizing day and night is equally important. Our oil glands aren’t as active as we age so we need to add a drop of hyaluronic acid and a drop of facial oil to our moisturizer while our skin is still damp, to boost hydration and keep our skin balanced.
SPF is still needed even though skin cancer and wrinkling are caused by the amount of sun we got in our 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, we still need to protect our skin. Look for a broad-spectrum SPF of 30+ and wear it every day.
Exercise does more than just tone our muscles, it also helps our skin by relieving stress and boosts circulation. The extra oxygen and blood flow can help our skin look brighter and healthier.
Sleep can prevent dark circles under our eyes and gives the rest of our body a chance to recharge. Lack of sleep can change our hormone levels and metabolism in many of the same ways that aging does. So, shoot for a solid 7 to 8 hours of shut eye every night. Easier said than done, I know.
